Abstract

Posted by crocea at 2005-11-09 18:42
As the number and sophistication of computational resources available for biomedical research has increased, the problem of interoperability between systems has become more important. There are two components of true interoperability. Syntactic interoperability is the ability of two systems to exchange information, and is a question of interface integration. Semantic interoperability is the ability to understand the information that is exchanged. To address these problems, the National Cancer Institute has initiated a program, the Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG), to create the infrastructure for a federated network of interoperable data and analytical services. The caBIG Grid achieves federated interoperability by focusing on interfaces and semantic metadata. Semantic metadata is a complete description of the meaning and valid values of the information exchanged by data systems. The details of this 'semantic interoperability' will be described.
